My Readership on Medium Tanked This Week

Last Sunday, my views on Medium were inexplicably way lower than they had been in months.

I’ve been writing more than ever on this platform, so I was concerned by what I saw. Then, I asked a few other writers, and learned that views were down site-wide. Although one theory attributed it to Black Friday shopping, that didn’t make much sense to me since only Sunday seemed to be affected.

Then, on Tuesday, I noticed that the my Sunday views had suddenly doubled. I’ve never seen something like this happen on Medium before. Even stranger, my Medium Partner Program payment for last month adjusted as well.

Apparently, there was a glitch affecting views, although I haven’t heard anything about it from Medium directly, only from other authors.

I thought that after the views got fixed on Tuesday, everything would be back to normal. Instead, I’ve seen steadily declining views starting on Wednesday. Nothing as drastic as the original glitch, but today is my worst day for readership in months.

Unfortunately, I’m just left scratching my head. Is it another glitch? A change in the algorithm? Or something I’m doing wrong?

I was incredibly grateful to see Shannon Ashley post an article describing the same problem. At least I know I’m not alone.

Her article was my main motivation for writing this one. I wanted to add my voice to the chorus in case anyone else is seeing a similar down tick.

Also, for new writers on Medium, I think it might be helpful to see that even those of us who have been here a while are still sometimes mystified by how the platform works. If you want to last here, you’ve got to learn to roll with the punches. This isn’t the first time my views have taken an unexpected drop, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Until recently, writing has been purely a hobby, so I wouldn’t have thought twice about these strange happenings. Unfortunately, a couple of months back I got laid off, and my writing income has been tiding me over until I start some part-time teaching work early next year.

So, I’ve got to admit that I’m feeling a little stressed that my views are dropping by so much in one of the places that I write the most. Still, it’s only been a few days of declining views, so I’m hopeful that it might be another glitch or a short-term trend.

My first instinct was to start writing more, or writing differently, but after seeing that other people are experiencing the same thing, it makes more sense to me to give it another week and see what happens.

Long-term, this is also a good reminder of the importance of diversifying. I already write a bit for other sites, but I think I’ll try to look for even more opportunities. The more places you write, the less you have to worry about any individual website’s quirks.

As for my immediate next steps, I’ve got a couple of posts that I’ve already written which are scheduled to post over the weekend. Aside from that, I’m going to try to spend the next couple of days not thinking about Medium at all. Hopefully, when I log back in on Monday, I’ll see that my stats have recovered.

(And good luck to anyone else experiencing a similar drop!)
